Overview > Case Studies > Process Improvement: DirectManage & XUI

DirectManage is a web application JWAY Project Managers and Consultants use to manage, track and report tasks on projects. DirectManage, deployed using the XUI (eXtensible User Interface) Framework, extends the familiar desktop application user interface and user experience to the web. It also allows Project Managers and Consultants to easily track and report time spent on projects and tasks.

Prior to DirectManage's deployment, Consultants reported their time through a web-based timesheet application with a traditional web user interface and interaction, as shown on the right.

This timesheet application worked well for years at JWAY. While using this tool, however, Project Managers had to contend with manually validating the tasks assigned to Consultants for the entire project lifecycle. Because Consultants do not have Microsoft Project installed on their machines, Project Managers had to print and/or generate a PDF version of the project plan. This was then distributed for validation and reporting to the Consultants. The Project Manager had to manually enter the reported time onto the MS Project file.

Project Objectives:
  • Improve communication process and accuracy of project status reporting mechanism
  • Develop a familiar and consistent web user interface for Project Managers and Consultants to manage JWAY projects
  • Use the XUI Framework to:

    • Deliver a consistent look-and-feel to users regardless of their entitlement or role
    • Leverage the familiarity of users with desktop environments, such as MS Windows or Linux to reduce training costs and encourage quick user adoption
    • Reduce the cost of maintaining the application

JWAY's DirectManage Solution:

JWAY developed and deployed the next generation project management and timesheet application. Using XUI, JWAY deployed Direct Manage with the user interface mimicking the look and feel of a project management desktop application. The screen on the right shows the DirectManage user interface.

With this solution, project communications related to time spent on tasks and status of task completion are now centrally managed in realtime.

JWAY's DirectManage Solution:
  • J2EE architecture
  • Tomcat Server 4.0
  • MS SQL database back-end
  • MS Project (as the project plan data entry application)
  • LDAP authentication scheme
  • Multi-user entitlement (Admin, PM, Engineer, Web Developer)
Results:
  • Improved the communication and accuracy of project status reporting mechanism
  • Increased the productivity of Project Managers and Consultants
  • Reduced the time spent on user training because of the familiar and consistent user interface and user experience
  • Increased user adoption rate
  • Reduced the costs of application maintenance

JWAY recently developed a web interface prototype using XUI for Visa International's asset management system. Read the testimonial and see what Visa International has to say about JWAY's excellent team support and the success of XUI.
